Sites with a lot of text tend to rank better than those with less text. Meatier is better (and I'm saying that as a vegetarian). You want to have lots of real juicy text on lots of pages. That means that you need to have articles, newsletters, descriptions, interviews, or anything that includes text related to your keywords or business area.

The idea is that sites with lots of text tend to be authorities in their area of expertise. So, not just any random text will do. Use real text about your business area. Let's take a local pottery store for example. You'll naturally describe your types of pottery on the home page and have descriptions with each product. Expand the idea and consider pages that detail each type of pottery style, the history of each style, cultural information, and ideas about placement of pottery in typical rooms. Not only with the search engines consider yours a weightier website — your customers will love it too. For service businesses consider case studies, application notes, and historical reviews.

You mean I have to write? Well, yes. Or you can hire a copywriter to do that for you. But text is essential to get good rankings especially when the keywords you're targeting are competitive.

You can think of getting links as building up your web site engine. The more links the greater the power. The content is like attaching the engine to your boat. The bigger the boat the better. Once your engine is built, you need to point your boat where you want to go. Each web page's text sets your course.
